Mike Thompson

Surfacing from the badlands of Perth’s Northern Suburbs, Mike Thompson fell in with the Carine Massive at an early age, which led to delinquency of a scale unheard of a the beachside private schools of the coastal sprawl. Frequenting the local fish and chip shop, the rowdy youths racked up impressive high scores on Ghosts and Goblins – not even bothering to wipe the chip grease from the joystick when they left. After a falling out with the gang over the legitimacy of Thatchers invasion of the Falklands, Thompson struck out to make his fortune from the mining boom. Unfortunately the boom didn’t eventuate for several decades, and was located significantly further North than the prospecting that was undertaken at Dog Swamp.Down on his luck Thomo began to build a reputation as a freelance projectionist, and was known to light up the side of a building “like it’s no one’s business”. This recognition lead to a stint in Perth’s second most popular 10 piece instrumental electro funk outfit, MaxWell, who wore a rut in Stirling highway with their regular treks to perform to the dreadlocked masses in Freo. Around this time some school chums emerged from the ashes of Forrestfield, and on the back of The Flaming Lip’s ‘Soft Bulletin’ threw together a few songs and started performing as The Stickfigures. Thomo soon clambered aboard, and theremin in hand (or not – you don’t actually touch those things – mind blown!) The Stickfigures rocked many a Perth venue, often to actual people who paid actual money at the door (actually).Thinking he was sensitive enough to be a drunk, and drunk enough to get sensitive, Thomo joined Seb, Sid and Dave with Jason to play at the first Sensitive Drunks show to celebrate a birthday. Good times were subsequently had before realising two bands was one too many for a family man. Currently settled down, pipe in hand, you can find Thomo hiding behind the keys performing with The Wine-Dark Sea.
