There She Goes

Track:
Demo:

Molly Meldrum – Intro
Seb – Vocals and Handclaps
Dave – Acoustic, Electric and 12 String Rickenbacker Guitars, Bass, Backing Vocals, Oohs and Lalalala’s, and Handclaps
Sid – Drums, Tambourine and Handclaps
Thommo – Keys
Shan – additional backing vocals
Liam – Handclaps

This song is about a girl I used to know at uni. All the boys were in love with her even though she was a drug dealer and user. One day I went out with her on her rounds. We walked around campus delivering packages and talking about love and life. Sometimes I wonder where she ended up. Perth needs good chemists …and chemistry.

Molly Meldrum excerpt taken from Countdown. Who was he talking about I hear you ask...well for that you'll have to wait for the filmclip. I've been asked if I got permission from the ABC to use this out-take. My response is this, "I'm Australian mate, I own the fucking ABC!"

There she goes.
Don’t you know she’s the one.
And when you get there, why don’t you come and get me some.

It’s a very strange situation.
It’s a very strange conversation.
And I want to tell her I’m so lonely.
But the hole in my heart has shown me.
That’s she’s never ever going to follow me, oh no.
There she goes.

Girl is great.
Girl is good.
We take a walk around our neighbourhood.

And when she’s talking to me..ohhh
And when she’s talking about love---ohh
You know that she’s the one.
She’s the one.

There she goes.
Don’t you know she’s the one.
And when you get there, why don’t you come and get me some.
There she goes.
There she goes.

Trapped Inside My Camera

Track:
Demo:

Seb - Vocals
Dave - Acoustic, Electric and 12 Rickenbacker String Guitars, Bass, Backing Vocals, Oohs and Lalalala’s, and Handclaps
Sid – Drums and Tambourine.

When Jules from The Panics was living at Bondy’s we used to sit around and listen to The Cure Tribute night. One night we sat on the couch and wrote a song each in the style on our hero Josh Fontaine from 6s and 7s. This is mine. It’s about my feelings when my mate Paul Ottway left the Veeline label we had started together to join The Panics. At the time I was alone and confused about my life. I was drinking too much and about to have a breakdown. I was definitely not thinking straight at the time. The line about me cutting my hair and going to work is about the decision I made to chose life and quit Veeline Records.

One night I did an acoustic version of this at the Rosemount which was bereft of deft whimsy.

Pictures of you trapped inside my camera
Days with you mapped out on my calendar
Footprints in my field, there's nothing left to steal
Why would you leave me in a town that I don't know?
You ask me to meet you, I come but you don't show
Why can't you see there's a star for you and me
Why can't you see there's a star
So I cut my hair and dyed it black
The foot of my boss into my back
He said "Boy won't know love,
Boy you won't know love,
Boy you won't know love just do as I say."
And that's what the lord up above calls change.

Adult Contemporary

Track:
Demo:

Seb – Vocals, Screams
Dave – Acoustic and Electric Guitars, E-Bow, Xylophone, Bass, Backing Vocals, Screams.
Sid – Drums, Tambourine and Screams.

This song pays homage to the mighty Tucker Bs and is most definitely a love song for Sue. It’s me pathetic, her perfect. It’s me trying to get it together as she simply shines. “And when things turn out wrong like they always do. But that never happens to you. And if you want to be. Become one with me. When all is said and done. You will be the one. And all you need to know is I love you so.”

Adult Contempoary is about growing up, having a good time being in a band, and growing into the type of man I always wanted to be.

This song shares a line with Tracey Reads’ (The Wine Dark Sea) “Softly” which makes me feel like less of a hack to be in the company of such greatness.

If I could make a toast to your face and to all that's good
If I could walk to your house, I'd tell your old man that you're never coming home again
If I could just walk straight get off my knees, shake the trees
If I could chase the sun, to the ocean I'd ask the stars what do they see?

It's you shining back at them
It's you shining back at them

And if you stay with me, I promise that I'd never let you go
But if you go away, the sun won't shine and the stars will slowly fade

And when things turn out wrong, like they always do
But that never happens to you
And if you want to be, become one with me
When all is said and done
You will be the one

And all you need to know is I love you so.

Perth Girls

Track:
Demo:

Some random kid – Blake Baby Intro
Seb – Vocals and Handclaps.
Dave – Acoustic, Electric and 12 Rickenbacker String Guitars, Bass, Backing Vocals, Oohs and Handclaps
Sid – Drums, Handclaps and Tambourine.
Elliot – Trumpet

Autumn leaves. Jamie Morrow wrote the first 4 lines when we were recording Style of Content. I sung it to Dave one night when we were demo-ing the songs and it sort of turned into a Beach Boys fromage. No not homage …a fromage. A cheesy tribute. Originally called “Perth Girls (are easy)” we got a rousing “fuck you” from a drunk patron at the Den when we announced the title. We truncated the title as not to offend other fans of the film “Earth Girls are Easy” featuring Jeff Goldblum.

The kid at the start is taken from the Blake Baby song "Take Me" from Rosy Jack World. Julianna is queen of the universe. Love and respect.

I'm out in this car
And I'm painting a picture of you
My mind's out of gear
And it's tearing my apart from you

Such a nice girl
Such a nice car
But I'm stuck in traffic
I'm not going far

I never told you just what you mean to me
I never told you I'm higher than the sky
I never told you just how you make me feel
I need to tell you I'm gonna make you mine
I'm gonna make you mine
I'm gonna make you mine

Someday shoes may never touch the ground
Look what you found
Summertime's here and it makes me feel allright
In the day and the night

Why don't you deceive me
I want you to leave me

Autumn leaves are falling on me
These are the things that I believe in
Autumn leaves are falling on me
These are the things that I believe in
I believe
Autumn leaves are falling on me
These are the things that I believe in

Dead Celebrities

Track:
Demo:

Seb - Vocals
Dave – Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Bass, Backing Vocals.
Sid – Drums.

Pretty dark lyrics about me at my worst. “I wish I had some direction. Reverse the cruelty of my inception. Do away with fate. Correct gods’ mistake.” Wow. Now that’s morbid. Originally entitled "Gothic Cowboy" this is another throwback to the Style Over Content days with Jamie Morrow.

I wrote the lyrics/riff  in my car whilst listening to Stoned and Dethroned when it came out by The Jesus and Mary Chain. The funeral man bit was written whilst listening to "Haven't I Been A Fool" by Grant Mcennan. The bit about driving into a tree references the reputation I got for drunk driving after a party at Carly and Lisa's. Little did they know I spent the night in my car sleeping it off.

As usual, Dave and Sid transform the song and I’m just along for the ride. Duncan and the guys love playing this live.

Do I have a worldwide plan? You betcha!

I wish I had some direction to reverse the cuelty of my inception
Do away with fate, correct God's mistake

Tell the funeral man that I like the smile on his face
Tell the funeral man that I'm coming to his place
Come for a ride with me
Get into my car as I drive into a tree...Teeheehee

I'm not a devilish man
I wear black because that's who I am
I'm not making a stand
But I gues you'll never understand that I have a worldwide plan.

What's Left of the Morning...

Track:
Demo:

Seb - Vocals
Dave – Acoustic, Electric and Slide Guitars, Bass, Harmonica and Backing Vocals.
Sid – Drums, Harmonica and Tambourine.

This is our version of the Josh Fontaine style song that Jules from The Panics and I wrote one drunken night on Steves couch. Jules’ version of the song is much poppier. So good. BTW This song has copyright infringed “Midnite On The A.M. Band” by The Stickfigures (see Signals). In fact the whole album is stolen in some way shape or form.

What's left of the morning I give it to sleeping
When you come a calling is when I awaken
And it seems this lonely heart can't mind what you do

When we go a walking you light up the arcade
When we get to talking we fill up an ashtray
And it seems this lonely heart will be alone a while

There's a thousand differnent things I need to say to you
In the letters that I'm writing everyday to you
And I'm getting so excited and I'll tell you soon

I think we should settle down

If I close up and pretend
The way things are heading I'll have me a good friend but still need a bedding

And it seems this lonely heart will be alone a while

There's a thousand differnent things I need to say to you
In the letters that I'm writing everyday to you
And I'm getting so excited and I'll tell you soon

I think we should settle down

A Boy Named Teresa

Track:

Seb - Vocals
Dave – Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Bass, Backing Vocals.
Sid – Drums and Tambourine.
Thommo - Keys

When you are 24 and you love someone and they don’t love you – it makes you write real crappy songs. Of course, when I wrote it I thought it was a hit. Always planned to changed the lyrics, never did. Mum always said I was lazy.

Again I presented this song to Dave in the shed I did using the same 3 chords on guitar. But unfortunately for Dave, as Sue once so aptly pointed out, I only actually play two chords.

A Thommo favourite.

I crashed your little Honda, she broke down and cried
I went out with your best friend, I took her for a ride
All she did was smile, you ran a country mile
You said "I really dig your style."
I want you dead like a hole in the head
And I want that geezer to give you a seizure, a touch of amnesia a bout of maleria.

A boy named Theresa to cancel your Visa
I want you to know, I think you should know
A boy named Theresa to cancel your Visa
I want you to know, I think you should know

I want you to see me away in Tahiti
To be with me baby, forget all the maybes
I could be happy to see you each Wednesday
Come on just an hour to prove that I love you

Courtney Love, Not War

Track:
Demo:

Seb - Vocals
Dave – Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Bass, Backing Vocals.
Sid – Drums and Tambourine.

This song is the conversation Michael Stipe had with Courtney Love and the ghost of Kurt Cobain, channelled through the spirit of Tom Morgan. "You killed him with cocaine, took a hit and you're to blame." When I demoed this I was still too shy to sing into a mic. Dave recorded the demo and hence Tom Morgan changed my dream. Now all I can think about is getting Allison Galloway to sing on one of our new tracks “Dream On”.

"Hey I'm a user," you call to let me know
As I lay down beside you, beside me, all alone

And I know that the sun won't shine, the rain has come, the fire's died
And I know that the spark won't creep, and I know yesterday still sleeps

You killed him with cocaine, took a hit and you're to blame

You kissed the son and now you're gone
You kissed the son and now you're gone
Stardom's trinket you said you wouldn't miss it
The needle came and went, you fixed it

Life as an icon you'd rather just die
Life as an icon you'd rather just die

My back is broken, my spirit is weak
And I can't stand on my own two feet

A Catholic Education

Track:
Demo:

Seb  – Vocals
Dave – Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Bass, Backing Vocals.
Sid – Drums, Organ and Tambourine.

A tongue in cheek account of my Catholic high school experience. If thou playest the “to everybody that we’ve forgotten” bit backwards thou hearest Teenage Fanclub’s “Star Sign.” Just try it Steve.

Upon hearing this song Peter Barr laughed. Duncan’s favourite song.

Nice canon guitar by Dave though, not to mention Sid’s organ. Dave love’s Sid’s organ.

Banned on Sonshine FM - "Adult Contemporary mix of mainstream and Christian music from Perth."

They sentenced me to 15 years of sexual frustration
My teenage glads died at the hands of a catholic education
My mother and my dad were Micks and they didn’t want no variation
There were no chicks just a room full of pricks at a catholic education

To everybody that we’ve forgotten
To everyone that loved us so
I forgot them, I forgot them

I think that I and ready to die
Watch my soul take a duck-dive into the fire
I know that you can go and get screwed
But what’s a boy in love supposed to do when you’re in love

I’m on my knees with rosaries and a fear of masturbation
I’d like to leave but dad’s paid the fees at the institution of molestation
The minister stares at my bits as he teaches me about damnation
Two more years of this and I’m hitting the piss to erase this catholic eduction

To everybody that we’ve forgotten
To everyone that loved us so
I forgot them, I forgot them

I think that I and ready to die
Watch my soul take a duck-dive into the fire
I know that you can go and get screwed
But what’s a boy in love supposed to do when you’re in love

Mary you’re OK, I heard your song on the radio and it makes my heart sing
Mary You’re OK

C.O.D.Y.

Track:
Demo:

Seb – Vocals and Handclaps.
Dave – Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Bass, Backing Vocals, Additional Drums and Handclaps.
Sid – Drums, Handclaps and Tambourine.

This song originally had just one verse. Dave wrote the second as he did with A Catholic Education. He asked me what it was about as it reminded him of the accidental death of Lou-anne Jones the lead singer of his first band Aisling. He based the second verse on a dream he had the night after her death where she came to him asking what happened the night before. The song also has a great ending. A great song all round. Chris Havercroft loves the belle of the ball. And us. Which is nice really. It’s nice to be loved by someone you love.

Ashamedly, I think the first line is an INXS rip off. And there is definately a line stolen from "Remember California" by childhood hereos REM.

The title, C.O.M.E.O.N.D.I.E.Y.O.U.N.G., is a direct reference to the Mogwai album which I bought after hearing on RTR-FM from other childhood hero Dave Cutbush.

She sits in a corner head held high, desperation slips from her hands
She turns and she smiles and she sighs "Goodnight."
The emptiness of life, the idle knife, are going to put out her light
She was a girl with a hole in her head
She filled it with your thoughts and now she's dead

I'm the one they talk about, I'm the one they don't want you around
All these sweet conspiracies, I remember all these things
I'm the one they talk about, can't you see that I don't want you now

She wakes in the morning, surrounded by light
Shakes the cobwebs and dreams from her head, she's no idea what happened last night
The certainty of death is off her chest, now she can finally rest

I'm the one they talk about, I'm the one they don't want you around
All these sweet conspiracies, I remember all these things
I'm the one they talk about, can't you see that I don't want you now

CODY - come on!
CODY - die young!

Come on. Die young.
You know you're brighter than the sun
And when the sky's about to fall, you know you're the belle of the ball.

Like Good Fireworks

Track:
Demo:

Seb – Vocals, Handclaps, Hootin’ and Hollerin’.
Dave – Acoustic Electric and 12 String Guitars, Bass, Backing Vocals, Handclaps, Hootin’ and Hollerin’.
Sid – Drums, Handclaps, Tambourine, Hootin’ and Hollerin’.
Elliot – Trumpet.
Steve – a Hootin’ and a Hollerin’.

I wrote the words to fit the Rickenbacker line I came up with. Who’s that shouting down the hallway? Steve! The human microphone is back! I think we played this live once. Grant danced and brought us beer. He's a good man.

This is essentially another song about the greatness of everything that is Sue.

Just like fireworks you are a thing that I behold
Like good fireworks you are stopping me from growing old
And the light that shines in my eyes, it shines from you
"Can we go do all those things we used to do?"

Not a lot can be said in my words
In a while I'm coming to you
Don't you know I can't wait any longer
There is a light that shines from you

Like Good Fireworks (reprise)

Track:

Seb – Vocals.
Dave – Acoustic Guitar and Backing Vocals.
Duncan - Acoustic Guitar and Backing Vocals.
Sid – Backing Vocals.

The first few lines were written by my then pretend girlfriend (who is referenced in many of these songs) who I bought a Yamaha guitar for on her 21st. I finished it off for her in the studio. I don't think she's picked up the guitar since (at least that's one thing we have in common! heehe). The freeway home is what I was offering to her but in fact it's what Sue gave me years later.

I feel you are trying to let yourself go
I want you to know I'm only a person...with a warm afterglow

"And I want you to know there's nothing inside you
But inside me there's a freeway to get you back home."
